GIROLAMO FRESCOBALDI (1583-1643)
Recercari, et Canzoni Franzese fatte sopra diversi oblighi in partitvra, 1615

Girolamo Frescobaldi (Ferrara, 15 September 1583 - Rome, 1 March 1643), Organista di San Pietro di Roma (i.e., organist of the Cappella Giulia, beginning in 1608), published in 1615 his RECERCARI, / ET CANZONI / FRANZESE / FATTE SOPRA DIVERSI OBLIGHI / IN PARTITVRA… Libro Primo, printed by the Roman publisher Bartolomeo Zannetti. In the dedication to Frescobaldi’s patron, the “Lord Cardinal Aldobrandino, Chamberlain of the Holy Church”. The composer himself describes this print as “the first, and small offspring of my feeble genius”. The collection of Recercari, et canzoni became a veritable bestseller and was reprinted no fewer than four times during Frescobaldi’s lifetime: Rome, Zannetti, 16182; as Il primo libro di capricci canzon francese, e recercari […] (after the first reprint, the Recercari, et Canzoni were published together and included in the reprints of the Capricci, the first edition of which was published by Luca Antonio Soldi in Rome in 1624), Venice, Vincenti, 1626; 1628; 1642
