Venetia Mundi Splendor – The Oktoechos ensemble presents the new CD at Palazzo Ducale in Venice

On Monday, November 13, at 4 pm in the suggestive scenery of the Chiesetta del Doge in Palazzo Ducale, will be held the presentation of the CD TC390001 Venetia Mundi Splendor – Music and Politics in Venice between the Middle Ages and Humanism realized by the Oktoechos Ensemble under the direction of Lanfranco Menga for Tactus. The event, which is held in collaboration between the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and the Fondazione Ugo and Olga Levi, will include the performance of six pieces from the collection, exemplifying the period considered and will be preceded by a discussion between Gherardo Ortalli of the Ca ‘Foscari University and Luisa Zanoncelli of the Fondazione Ugo and Olga Levi. The album features a music program featured in the Venice Film Festival ”The Spirit of Venice Music” commissioned in 2013 by La Fenice Theater and, for the occasion, integrated according to the performing style that has always characterized the Ensemble Oktoechos. It is a collection of celebratory motets written by Italian musicians of Flemish origin between the middle of the 13th and the middle of the14th century for official events related to political and religious figures of the Republic. The compositions confirm the historical importance of the music in the public life of Venice and its traditional function of solemnity and magnificence and reveal the evolution of the motet: the intensifying of the complexity of the structure, in line with the common European language, along with Italian specifics such as the absence of pre-existening cantus firmus and styles coming from other forms such as the madrigal and the ballad.
