Canoro Pianto di Maria Vergine sopra la faccia di Christo estinto, Poesia del Reverendissimo P. Abate Grillo Raccolta per D. Angelico Patto Accademico Giustiniano, Venezia, 1613
The Canoro Pianto di Maria Vergine sopra la faccia di Christo Estinto, published in Venice in 1613, is a miscellanea of works created according to a fairly popular musical practice of the early Seicento: an editor, musician or poet would call together a series of well-known composers with whom he had ties and enlist them in a common literary project. Each of them would be entrusted to set to music a part of the chosen text, which was generally of a very figurative nature and was often the work of a single poet. This type of operation was widespread both is sacred and secular music, and lent itself well to the celebration of a particular poet both for the unitary representation of a literary work and for the variety of the musical settings.
