CANTI GREGORIANI

THE NOTATION OF RAVENNA OF THE XI AND XII CENTURIES. This specific type of notation has been conjectured by prof.
Giacomo Baroffio through his research in Medieval notation.
He noticed a particular type of notation present in the area spanning from Padova, through Emilia Romagna and into Marche, and considered the most probable origin of this to be a geographical centre from which it expanded.
This geographical centre was Ravenna.
His theory turned out to be confirmed through the study of the fragments of Medieval documents with neumatic notation preserved in the city of Ravenna.
In these, the majority were written in the very same type of notation noticed throughout the region.
And furthermore, with an incredible stroke of luck, one of the fragments (AC 103) contained a liturgical Officium dedicated to the bishop of Ravenna, Saint Severo.
On this fragment there is also an explicit citation of Ravenna, thus evidencing the origin of the fragment, and by the extension, of the type of notation.
In addition to several chants common to the Gregorian repertory, these fragments preserve some parts of the Easter mass, among which a Sanctus in Greek, which furthermore is witness to the Byzantine ties of Ravenna and the liturgy performed there (AS 2)
