Giovanni Morandi (1777-1856)

These Sonatas were written between 1830 and 1843 by Giovanni Morandi (1777-1856), one of the most important Italian composer for organ music of the 19Th century. Morandi was born in Pergola, a small town in the Marches region and he was close colleague and friend of Gioachino Rossini. According to biographer Giuseppe Radiciotti, it was Morandi who played a helpful and instrumental part in Rossini’s debut as on opera writer.
The originality of these music lies in their destination for organ 4 hands, a very rarity in the Italian Organ repertoire.
The influence of Opera on Morandi’s Sonata is revealed by the structure of the melodies and the nature of the motifs, which seems to derive from theatrical works, and for their form based on the Rossini’s Symphonies. These pieces, currently are preserved at the monastery of Santa Cristina in Senigallia, belong to the group of 16 compositions for 4 hands, 10 of which are dedicated to two skilled organist nuns: Anna Costante Cacciari e Candida Colomba Loreti.
